Google incognito browser?

I was messing around on the wrench thing on the side of the Google Chrome screen. I was surprised to see the "Incognito tab." It claims nothing will show up on your history, does it really work? Would anything show up on your history if you didn't download or join anything? I didn't think you could do that!
